Some Red Hat Prose

Take a look at some prose with a Red Hat theme! The first poem, "Warning", was written by Jenny Joesph. A woman named Sue Ellen Cooper sent a copy of the poem along with a red hat to a close friend as a gift on her 50th birthday. Thus the Red Hat Society was born. Sue Ellen Cooper became it's founder.
The poem suggests that one can grow older without losing one's playful spirit.

If you have a poem, short story or other type of prose that you'd like to share with your Red Hat Sisters, please submit it to us and we'll post it on our blog.

TITLE: Warning
AUTHOR: Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman
I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't suit me
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals and say we've no money for butter
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beer mats and things in boxes
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We will have our friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple.

TITLE: Violets Are Purple
AUTHOR: Greta Glover

Violets are Purple
Some say they’re Blue
Divas in Red Hats
Know that’s not true

Daisies are Yellow
That can’t be right
A Lady in Crimson
Told me they’re White

A Woman in Scarlet
With a hat on her head
Confirmed without question
That Roses are Red.

TITLE: GATHER MY SISTERS
AUTHOR: an original poem by Eugenia Clark©2008

Gather my sisters
In your purple and red
Your hat sits gracefully upon your head.
You have done for others all of your life
Now it’s your turn to grab some spice.
We come in 2’s, 3’s and 4’s
But in a full chapter it says so much more.
We are here to share, we are here to laugh
We are here to have fun and follow a path
Of sisterhood, motherhood and womanhood
And let others know that it’s well understood.
Life isn’t over at 50, oh no, life has just begun
For us, the Red Hatters, we believe what’s been sung
“Like a fine wine, we get better with time!”

Eugenia Clark, aka Lady Waitn2receive, is a member of the Scarlet Threads of Largo, Maryland, Official Chapter #65946 of the Red Hat Society. I was compiled to write this poem when I brought a piece of fabric by Michael Miller entitled “Red Hat Parade"

TITLE: The Red Hat Lady
AUTHOR: Sharde, age 12

I’m walking down the street
in my pumps and my heels
with my red hat all the
fellas wanna kill

One fella said
Oh, she’s fine
The other fella said
I wish she was mine

I walk to the bus stop
All the ladies say,
I wonder what’s her secret?
What’s her secret?
What’s her secret?

I say
You really wanna know?
You really wanna know?

They say
Yes, yes what’s your secret?
I’m just the red hat lady,
Oh
I’m just the red hat lady,
What?
I’m just the red hat lady. _______________________________________
TITLE: Sophisticated Ladies
AUTHOR: Margaret Mosby

Fine red hat, purple clothes,
That’s the way their wardrobe goes

Crimson bonnet, purple dress,
Nothing more nothing less

That’s all you need, you’ll fit right in
All are welcome, thick and thin

Black or white short or tall
Their motto is “Just have a ball.”

Bring your kazoo, sing a song
Join right in like you belong

Fame and fortune they’re not after
Just good ole fashion fun and laughter,

There are clubs that try to be
Just like the Red Hat Society

Don’t be fooled. Use your head.
A flower’s not a rose, just because it’s red.

Those scarlet sisters, so SOPHISTICATED
Cannot be cloned or duplicated!
